Aims of Data Science for Business Innovation Course

Data Science for Business Innovation represents data science that contributes to decision-making, planning, development, design execution, management, evaluation and various other business activities in companies and other organizations as well as in society. Business Data Science for Business Innovation conducts education and research on methodologies to achieve better organizational management through the application of engineering methods, including information technology, from a broad perspective that takes into account society and the global environment.

 The course specializes in quality and environmental management, production management, new product development, marketing science, reliability and safety engineering, statistics, machine learning, financial engineering, actuary, operations research, soft computing, human media engineering, Kansei engineering, intelligent informatics, natural language processing, etc.

 In the first semester, we train engineers and researchers who can play a leading role in these specialized fields. In the second semester, we train researchers and engineers who have the knowledge and ability to carry out research independently through more advanced research activities. The program also fosters human resources through which working professionals in industry can study the specialized fields of this department and conduct applied research related to the solution of actual problems.

Features of the Data Science for Business Innovation
1. Acquisition and advanced application of the three competencies required of data scientists

Education and research will be conducted with the goal of ensuring the acquisition and advanced application of the following three skills required of data scientists needed by society.

Business skills: Data science is used by various companies and organizations in the real world. Students will learn how to organize business issues and use data appropriately to solve problems based on an understanding of the issues and backgrounds of the organizations in question.

Data science skills: Many organizations are required to extract useful information from vast amounts of data. To this end, students acquire various knowledge and skills to structure and organize data, and furthermore to extract information from such organized data, using knowledge and techniques of advanced mathematics, statistics, machine learning, information processing, and optimization.

Data engineering skills: Data scientists must not only have knowledge of data science, but also the engineering skills to be able to implement and operate it. To this end, they acquire the skills and abilities to use, implement, and operate data science in a meaningful way.

2. Joint research with companies and research institutions

Providing new methodologies to better manage companies and various other organizations

is one of the important roles of Data Science for Business Innovation Course. The department is actively collaborating with various companies and research institutions to conduct new data science research and its application to society.

3. For working people

New challenges are arising for companies to solve as a result of globalization of management, digital transformation of society (DX), and diversification of people’s values. There is a rapidly growing need to send talented people to graduate schools to solve these issues from a more creative perspective under a joint industry-academia structure. In order to meet such expectations and demands from society, the doctoral course of this department provides a research guidance system that enables students to take up problems they face in their daily work as research subjects while working for companies or other organizations, and to try to develop new methodologies through the solution of those problems.

Our graduate school is located on a central city campus, providing the most desirable conditions for joint research with companies and other research institutions. In addition, the use of advanced information processing technology is indispensable for solving the research problems that students in this department work on. For this reason, advanced information processing facilities and an environment equipped with functions necessary for education and research have been established.

5. Proactive acceptance of foreign students

In recent years, international students from many countries have applied for admission to this department and have been enthusiastic about their studies and research. We have established special entrance examinations for international students and a tutor system (graduate students provide one-on-one guidance and advice to international students regarding Japanese language study, student life, etc.). One of the features of this department is that it actively accepts international students and provides detailed guidance according to the abilities of each student.
